Database
A computerized filing system forming the core of most corporate
computer systems. Databases are, on the face of it, simple tools
used to store and retrieve information. In reality, they are big and
complex programs that are subjected to extreme pressure as the
demand for sophisticated analysis of corporate data grows.
Database Support
If your web site will leverage a database to store information, database support
by the hosting company will be required. After you have developed your web site,
you will know which database will be required. Some commonly used database
programs are SQL Server, MySQL, Access, Oracle, and FoxPro. Databases can be
difficult to configure properly. Before you sign up with a web host, first
inquire if the host can support your database needs.
Data Transfer
This is the amount of data that is transferred from an account as visitors
view the pages of the web site. If you have a web site with lots of video,
audio, and images that gets many visitors per day, you would have to make sure
that you choose a host that will allow large amounts of data to be transferred.
If you choose a host that only allows 200 MB of data transfer per month, and
your site transferred 500 MB per month, then the host may stop half of your
visitors from viewing your site and you could lose potential customers. Your
best bet is to try to find a host that offers unlimited data transfer or at
least a Gig of transfer. A gig is more than enough for most web sites. As a
general rule, 500 MB of data transfer is equivalent to 20,000 page views.
DBMS / DataBase Management System
A program that lets client programs that access the database free
from having to know where the physical data is located.
DCOM / Distributed Component Object Model
DCOM is a set of Microsoft concepts and program interfaces in which
client program objects can request services from server program
objects on other computers in a network. DCOM is based on COM, which
provides a set of interfaces allowing clients and servers to
communicate within the same computer (that is running Windows 95 or
a later version).
Dedicated Server
A more expensive type of account in which the web hosting
company provides you with an entire hosting setup including your own
server hardware that only you can use. This usually means a much
faster loading time for your site because the entire computer is
"dedicated" to running the server software. This is different from
most other hosting accounts in which your web site will share space
on a server with many other web sites, called a virtual server. A
dedicated server makes sense for web sites that require higher
availability and higher data transfer rates.
Demon Internet
The first ISP in the UK to offer full dial-up Internet access to
consumers.
DES / Data Encryption Standard
A widely used method of data encryption judged so difficult to break
by the US government that its export to other countries was
prohibited.
DHCP / Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
DHCP, also stands for "Domain Host Control Protocol". A network
server uses this protocol to dynamically assign IP addresses to
networked computers. The DHCP server waits for a computer to connect
to it, then assigns it an IP address from a master list stored on
the server. Using DHCP, managing IP addresses isn't a problem for
network administrators.
Digerati
Movers and shakers in the digital world, especially those celebrated
in John Brockman's book of the same name.
Digital Signature
A device that uniquely identifies the sender of an electronic
message or document, based on public key cryptography. The purpose
of a digital signature is to guarantee that senders of such messages
really are who they claim to be, an increasingly important concern
for businesses considering E-Commerce Strategies.
Digital Wallet
A consumer account set up to allow e-commerce transactions through a
particular credit card processing system. Before the consumer can
make a purchase, he or she must first establish an account with the
credit card processor, who provides an ID and password. These can
then be used to make purchases at any web site that supports that
transaction system. CyberCash's "Digital Coin" system is an example
of a digital wallet system.
Discount Rate
A percentage fee paid to the merchant account provider or ISO for
handling an electronic transaction. Most web merchants pay between
two and 10 percent of their revenue from online credit card or
electronic check orders.
Disintermediation
The process by which producers and consumers are brought closer
together, making middlemen redundant. This ugly word, borrowed from
the banking world, is especially relevant to Internet technologies
which allow their users direct access to information that might
otherwise require a mediator.
Disk Space
This indicates the amount of disk space that will be available
to you on the hosts server to hold your web site files. Normally
because HTML files are small, a web site (unless it has extensive
graphics or database functionality) will be small, as low as 1 or 2
MB in most cases.
Distributed Computing
Describes a way of using networked computers to work together
collaboratively, using the combined power of their processors to
perform large or difficult tasks.
DNS / Domain Name System
A system that maps user-friendly computer host and domain names
(e.g., www.Research-Hosting.co.uk) to IP addresses (e.g., 201.123.28.22).
Like telephone numbers, IP addresses uniquely identify computers on
the Internet for addressing messages.
Domain Name
A name that identifies one or more IP addresses.
Domain Name Parking / Domain Parking
When you get a new domain name, you may not have completed your web
site yet. You need to have a place to park your domain name under
name servers until you are ready to build your web site.
Domain Pointing
Domain pointing transports the visitors from your registered domain
name(s) to your existing website.
Domain Redirects
This points additional domains to subdirectories of a main domain.
Domain, top-level
The right-most part of an Internet address, indicating the type
and/or location of a user or system. Ex: In the address tywer@Research-Hosting.co.uk,
.com is the top level domain - a commercial domain in this case and
Research-Hosting.co.uk is the full domain name.
DSL / Digital Subscriber Line
Digital Subscriber Line (or, sometimes, Loop). DSL services are
designed to improve bandwidth connections over ordinary copper phone
lines.
DSSSL / Document Style Semantics and Specification Language
An ISO standard under preparation, addressing the semantics of
high-quality composition in a manner independent of particular
formatting systems or processes. DSSSL is intended as a
complementary standard to SGML for the specification of semantics.
DTD / Document Type Definition
The definition of a document type in SGML, consisting of a set of
markup tags and their interpretation.
Hosting Tips
Ask your host to pay for your domain name.
If you want to host a NEW domain name, you can request
the hosting company to pay your domain name for you. The
cost of domain registration and renewal is about £6 per
year.Minimize your website expenses
If you are unusual about hosting and if you are still in the
development and testing stage of your website, go for cheap
hosting service. You save money by minimizing your website
expenses on the initial stage, and once your site is ready
for public to view, you can always decide to stay or move to
another host. Always choose to host with reliable hosts that
offer responsive technical support.
Read user reviews and hosting news
If you already have a host, and you intend to switch and
search for another host, always start your search by reading
user reviews and hosting news. This is simply because
hosting companies that are always in the news are always
innovating to provide better, cheaper, faster, newer or more
efficient hosting services in the current marketplace. User
review are comments provided by the people who have used and
experienced their hosting services. Read users reviews to
find out the actual hosting services provided by the hosts
to help you decide which hosts suit your budget and plans. |
